John Calvin's Life

This is a very good overview of the life of John Calvin, given by Joe Tyrpak, the assistant pastor at Tri-County Bible Church in Madison, Ohio.

Keep in mind at the point when he covers the circumstances surrounding the death of Miguel Serveto (Michael Servetus), that which is often not either revealed or researched too thoroughly, that several years prior to Senior Servetus fleeing to Geneva, John Calvin corresponded with him in efforts to help Servetus see the Trinity in scripture. When Sr. Servetus was arrested and placed on trial by the state as a heretic, John Calvin's position as pastor was to give testimony as evidence of the truth behind Servetus' unitarian belief; but for the year prior to his execution, John Calvin, as a pastor, visited Sr. Servetus nearly every day, reading the scriptures to him and trying to convince Servetus of the truth of the Trinity so that Servetus might repent and recant.

This sermon preached by Pastor Don McKinney on March 3, 1970 was the last sermon he delivered at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church during a special meeting called for the district superintendent to attend. Brother McKinney had come to embrace the doctrine of God's sovereign grace and as he began to teach this doctrines, several members met the teaching with hostility. After God's Word was preached and those believing the doctrines of grace were asked to stand and be recognized, Brother McKinney and those standing were asked to leave the church. That day, in Lake Charles, LA, Heritage Baptist Church began.

Brother McKinney was recently called home to be with the Lord, but we pray that his preaching may continue to live on through such venues as SermonAudio.com.

When I was in Scammon Bay, Alaska, someone handed me an audio recording of the testimony of Bill Wiese, the author of the book, 23 Minutes in Hell. Interestingly, a few weeks later, there was someone making the rounds of the villages making similar claims.

It seems that I am asked to comment about this every few months. Let me give my official statement concerning this testimony as it relates to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, by presenting it in the form of a question:

WHEN GOD'S ONE AND ONLY SON, JESUS CHRIST, SUFFERED THE WRATH OF ALMIGHTY GOD UPON CALVARY'S TREE FOR THE SINS OF ALL THE ELECT, WAS CHRIST'S TESTIMONY NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO BE PROCLAIMED THE GOOD NEWS?

My Bible tells me that "the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy" (Revelation 19:10).

Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, for God's glory alone. Salvation is NOT by faith in Christ plus a testimony of someone who escaped "hell" because of Christ; it is in Christ alone for His finished work upon a criminal's cross.
